Family owned & operated since 1935
Drummond & Etheridge has been built on a reputation for talking straight with customers and providing quality service long after the initial sale. It’s a simple, honest approach that has seen us grow steadily for more than 90 years.
Today
Today we are a family owned and operated company with branches from Nelson right through to Southland and over to the West Coast of the South Island, selling and servicing industry-leading products and technology for the agricultural, construction, forestry, commercial and lifestyle sectors.
Mid Canterbury remains home. Our Ashburton building was built to showcase our line-up of quality brands and to provide a central, up-to-date service facility for customers right across the South Island.

“I’m proud of what we have achieved with the business: attracting some of the most talented people in the industry, delivering even higher levels of customer service, investing in state-of-the-art servicing technology, providing training and parts support, leveraging attractive finance packages for customers and attracting quality brands to our stable of franchises.”

How it began
1928
Arthur Etheridge starts his mechanics apprenticeship aged 14 and becomes the top mechanic at Ashburton’s Furnace and Drummond.
1935
When the Furnace and Drummond partnership dissolves, Drummond offers Arthur a partnership. Arthur is just 19 years old.
1962
Arthur’s son Peter joins the business and soon finds his niche selling tractors.
1975
D&E takes on the John Deere franchise, and the two names become synonymous in Mid Canterbury.
2004
A second John Deere franchise is purchased in Templeton, later relocating to a purpose-built facility in Rolleston.
2017
The purchase of Gordon Handy Machinery adds six dealerships, almost doubling our team and extending our John Deere dealerships to eight, from Nelson to Oamaru and the West Coast.
Today
The Etheridge family remains at the helm, with Mark on the Board. A dedicated Distribution Store supports on-time parts supply across the network, and Repairs and Spares in Ashburton refurbishes, dismantles and sells used parts.
